‘A stranger visiting’ Tungorna releases his debut EP ‘YSTER’

From the Swedish forests of Karlskoga comes producer Johan Lundgren.
Though he had half a lifetime of producing and songwriting behind him, a solo debut was never a topic of discussion until he completely changed his lifestyle and traded his daily routine for full time music making. The long winters of Stockholm were replaced by the Californian sun, and Tungorna began coming to life as Johan Lundgren’s debut solo project.

Spending the next few years living in different parts of the world, the change of environment and the limited musical equipment he could bring with him became a way to challenge himself and finally produce his debut EP that is YSTER. “I only had my laptop, a cheap microphone and a small keyboard to come with me, but as it turns out, it was all I needed.”

YSTER is a dark 5 track collection of songs pushing boundaries between dance, electronica and chill wave. Johan explains the sound progression during his travels and his current residency in London. “Limits and borders became a recurring theme. Both the borders crossed, but also the ones drawn by oneself and by others. As I’ve been a stranger visiting for a while now, I soon realised that the feeling of something foreign would evolve into a calm sense of home wherever I settled down. I think you can hear these transitions on my EP. The songs start in one location and land somewhere completely different.”

Before Tungorna, Johan Lundgren has been a frequent live collaborator for the audiovisual project iamamiwhoami. “a creative push”, he says. This is also how Tungorna came to be introduced to ionnalee’s label, To whom it may concern. “they have formed an inspiring environment with their music, label and the world surrounding it, keeping total control, not only of the creative process but also the production, without some man in a suit intervening.”

From the likes of artists and experimental producers such as Four Tet, Floating Points and Caribou, Tungorna creates music with a lo-fi and naïve feel that still occupies depth through its multilayered musicality. Lundgren himself describes Tungorna’s sound as “a collage of interesting bits and pieces that don’t necessarily have to be ‘good’. the beauty is in the flaws and is kept together with melodies and a moderately danceable beat.”
An example of this is the pulsating “IN SITU”, torn between different musical universes of the hard synth verses and the floaty and dreamy breaks dressed by operatic distorted voice samples, or the moody final track “HEART IS” which brings the early suggestiveness of fellow Swedish electronic masters The Knife to mind.

With his debut YSTER, Tungorna showcases his incredible production skills with a progressive sound that set the tone for electronic music in 2018.
